Bristol, a large vibrant city with two universities, is on the estuary of the River Avon. It is some 190 km to the west of London and directly accessed from the London to Bristol M4 motorway. Flights to and from Bristol International Airport connect directly with many major cities. Find out how to get to Bristol.
The city is full of character, contemporary yet with a rich history and cultural heritage, including many centuries as a major port for sea trade. The traditional parts of the city contrast with the impressive Harbourside millennium development. The new Broadmead Shopping Centre, opened in 2009, offers visitors a choice from three hundred shops, bars and cafes.
The course takes place at the University of Bristol Students Union and at Bristol Grammar School. Bristol Grammar School has a long tradition going back to the sixteenth century. In 1532, Henry VIII issued a charter to enable it to move to larger premises. Students are often able to receive their end-of-course certificates in the historic Great Hall.
Both the Students Union and the Grammar School are within easy reach of the City Centre.

What is the Accommodation Like? [click to expand / minimise]
We have been arranging programme in Bristol for more than thirty years. Our hosts live in residential areas around the city. They enjoy receiving our students into their homes and some have been doing so for a long time.
You live as a member of the household during your stay and there is no other student with the same first language as you staying in the home (unless you particularly ask that you stay in the same home as one of your friends). Students are normally accommodated in twin rooms which they share with a student of a different nationality.
Our accommodation and welfare officer (local organiser) is always available during the course and will be pleased to give you any help you may need. Find out more about a homestay. The Programme [click to expand / minimise]
You are busily occupied on the course programme on six full days (Mondays to Saturdays) each week and on one evening.
You usually have English lessons on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. There are leisure activities on Monday and Friday afternoons and on one evening, and full-day excursions on Wednesdays and Saturdays, except for the Saturday at the end of your course.
You spend Sunday with your hosts. View a sample course programme here.
English lessons [click to expand / minimise]
Your course (twenty forty-five-minute lessons each week) encourages you to make the most of your stay in England by concentrating on spoken English and it gives you maximum opportunity to practise both inside and outside the classroom. There are more formal lessons on grammar and vocabulary and less formal learning activities including Active English Practice sessions in the afternoons.
You learn through working in pairs and groups, acting out relevant real life situations, and through assignments or projects inside the teaching room or outside.
There is an excursion preparation lesson on the day before each full-day excursion and a follow-up lesson on the day after.
You will want to improve your English as much as you can so that you will be able to talk in a more relaxed and easy manner with your teachers, your hosts and your new friends on the course! The common language will, of course, be English! You’ll need your English, too, when you are out on excursions and when you are doing your shopping!Activities and excursions [click to expand / minimise]
You may take part in the Bristol trail, visit one of the museums or galleries, or ‘At Bristol’, a hands-on science and natural history centre near the harbour. Each week there is an evening activity, usually a disco at the Grammar School.
For those with a particular interest in sporting activities, there may be volleyball, badminton, football and swimming.
You go on excursions to such interesting and world-famous places as Bath, Cardiff and Windsor. There is always an excursion to London which includes an attraction such as a guided tour, the London Eye or a river boat trip.
Members of EJO staff accompany each activity and excursion. What is included in the price? [click to expand / minimise]
