Scarborough College
Residential (Full-Board) » Elementary to Advanced » Ages 12-17
THE TOWN
Scarborough is a beautiful seaside town, set amidst unspoilt countryside on
the spectacular North Yorkshire coast. Originally famous for its spa waters,
Scarborough has much to offer, from its two sweeping bays, separated by the
prominent castle headland, to fine Scarborough College Victorian architecture,
vibrant gardens and a working harbour with a colourful fishing fleet.
Leeds-Bradford and Manchester International Airports are within easy reach by
road or rail.
THE COURSE CENTRE
Scarborough College was established as an independent boarding school
in 1898. Set in acres of parkland looking out towards the North Sea, and
only a short walk from the beach, the college has excellent outdoor sports
facilities including tennis courts, football and volley ball pitches.
Inside there is a gym, a large theatre and students will have the use of
the computer laboratory. The classrooms are superbly equipped and the
bright, modern dining room offers a high standard of in-house
catering.
ACCOMMODATION
Just a short walk from the main college building, three attractive
boarding houses provide twin and small multi-bedded rooms, with
coin-operated telephones in each house. Comfortable lounges with
flat-screen TVs, large sofas and armchairs are a homely place to socialise
with friends, or relax over a game of table-tennis or snooker.
TUITION
In small, manageable classes of up to sixteen, the course aims to make
the most of the students’ stay in England by focussing on spoken English
and giving maximum opportunity for practice both inside and outside the
classroom. We include more formal lessons on grammar and vocabulary,
informal Active English Practice sessions and excursion preparation
lessons before the full-day excursions. The common language is of course
English, so students are further motivated to learn in order to
communicate with their new friends.
ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS
The historic town itself offers a wealth of opportunities for exploring
from the castle to the harbour, the seafront to the museum. A rich and
varied staff-accompanied programme will include 10-pin bowling and beach
barbecues, casino nights and talent evenings, with full-day
excursions to such destinations as Lightwat Valley theme park, York and
Hull.
