Univ Durham Residential

University of Durham - Residential

The City

Durham is described as the Jewel in the Crown at the heart of County Durham in the North-East of England, approximately 20 miles from Newcastle. Nestled beneath the magnificent Cathedral and Castle, Durham is a compact city with excellent air, rail and road connections. From the Victorian indoor market and the unique Oriental Art Museum, to the Heritage Centre and the modern Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, Durham's attractions span 1000 years of history. Visitors can spend a relaxing afternoon on the river or in the Botanic Gardens among the exotic trees and tropical butterflies.

The Course Centre

St. Aidan's College, part of Durham University, situated on the outskirts of the City, is set in a green and peaceful campus, with ducks on the pond and a view of the cathedral from the modern Dining Hall. Following the banks of the river, the college is an easy walk from the heart of Durham and there is also a regular bus service.

Activities and Excursions

Sports available on campus include tennis, football and volleyball, with swimming in a local pool. Staff-accompanied local activities may include boat hire, a visit to the Cathedral, an open-air museum, a medieval castle and the oldest working railway in the world. Full-day excursions are planned to the Lake District, York and Edinburgh.

Accommodation

Situated in modern purpose-built blocks, in a quiet corner of the campus, the large, comfortable single rooms all have wash basins and fridges. There are ample toilets and showers on each floor, comfortable common rooms with TVs and a computer room for students’ use. The dining hall serves a choice of dishes with a vegetarian option.
