THE TOWN

Guildford is a University town in Surrey, 50 km to the southwest of London and an hour by road from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.

The attractive, traditionally English High Street leads down to a bridge over the River Wey and to the bus and rail stations.

The town centre has a multi-screen cinema, two theatres and a wide range of shops including a large, modern pedestrian shopping precinct. There is a wide choice of cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants.

THE COURSE CENTRE

The course takes place in Guildford town centre, not far from the bus station, and approximately fifteen minutes walk from the residential accommodation on the University of Surrey campus.

Homestay
You live in single rooms in homes in the residential areas of Guildford, Godalming or in nearby villages with easy access to the town centre. You have breakfast and evening meal with your hosts from Monday to Saturday and breakfast, lunch and evening meal on Sundays, making your own arrangements for lunch from Monday to Saturday.

Residential accommodation
You stay in University Court on the modern, but beautifully landscaped, University of Surrey’s main Stag Hill campus, close to the Cathedral and about fifteen minutes walk from the town centre.

Accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis in modern single ensuite rooms, each with its own washbasin, shower and wc. All bedrooms have tea and coffee making facilities and direct dial telephones. There are, of course, bars and places to eat on campus.

The Programme [click to expand / minimise]

You are fully occupied on the course programme on five full days (Mondays to Fridays) each week.

You have English lessons on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and afternoons. You have four forty-five minute lessons on each of these mornings and three forty-five minute lessons in the afternoons. There is a full-day excursion on Wednesday.

Saturdays and Sundays are free and provide the perfect opportunity to explore places of interest or make the most of the leisure facilities on offer in Guildford. View a sample course programme here.

Tuition [click to expand / minimise]

Lessons take place on four mornings and four afternoons each week in groups of no more than eight students. Studying in smaller classes provides an excellent opportunity for direct contact between student and teacher, and lessons can progress at an altogether faster pace.

In the mornings, you do intensive work on structure, pronunciation, vocabulary and idiomatic expression to develop your skills in both spoken and written English. The course books encourage the use of natural, real-world grammar and vocabulary to help students succeed in social, academic and professional settings.

Common European Framework language learning goals provide the focus of communication activities where you learn and practise the language you need to converse in English. The course books include native English Speaker sections to help you to express yourself in a clear and natural manner. Our teachers also use additional resources from the English-speaking world, such as newspaper and magazine articles or extracts from radio news bulletins, to supplement the material in the course books.

Each afternoon session focuses on one of the language skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing and works on improving performance in the relevant area. The learning activities during these sessions are varied and interesting.

Excursions and leisure time [click to expand / minimise]

There is an EJO staff-accompanied full-day excursion each week. There is always a day in London and other visits may include Oxford or Windsor.

You are fully occupied during the day on weekdays. For later in the day there are plenty of shops in the traditional cobbled High Street and in the large indoor Friary Shopping Centre, along with a wide choice of cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants.

The weekends provide free time for you to make your own arrangements and to practise and develop the English that you have learnt during the week. You may like to spend more time in London, forty-minutes away by train, or explore Guildford and the surrounding area.

Leisure opportunities in Guildford include such activities as swimming and fitness training at the large, very well equipped Spectrum Leisure Centre. There is an excellent multi-screen cinema and Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre is centrally and attractively situated on the banks of the River Wey.
