Guildford is a University town in Surrey, 50 km to the southwest of London and an hour by road and rail from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. Find out how to get to Guildford.
The attractive, traditionally English High Street leads down to a bridge over the River Wey and to the bus and rail stations. The town centre has a multi-screen cinema, two theatres and a wide range of shops including a large, modern pedestrian shopping precinct. There is a first class, modern leisure centre nearby.
Our course is based at Guildford Adult Learning Centre, with some classes at the Millmead Centre; and the Adult course at the Guildford Institute. All three are long established and well known educational centres in the heart of Guildford.

What is the Accommodation Like? [click to expand / minimise]
The majority of our welcoming hosts live within a twent -to thirty -minute journey of the tuition centre. You may stay in a neighbouring town or village, such as Farncombe or Godalming, within easy reach of Guildford town centre by train or bus.
You live as a member of the household during your stay and there is no other student with the same first language as you staying in the home (unless you particularly asked that you stay in the same home as one of your friends). Students are normally accommodated in twin rooms which they share with a student of a different nationality.
Our accommodation and welfare organiser is always available during the course and will be pleased to give you any help you may need. Find out more about a homestay.
The Programme [click to expand / minimise]
You are busily occupied on the course programme on six full days (Mondays to Saturdays) each week and on one evening.
You usually have English lessons on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. There are leisure activities on Monday and Friday afternoons and on one evening, and full-day excursions on Wednesdays and Saturdays, except for the Saturday at the end of your course.
You normally spend Sunday with your hosts. View a sample course programme here.
English lessons [click to expand / minimise]
Your course (twenty forty-five-minute lessons each week) encourages you to make the most of your stay in England by concentrating on spoken English and it gives you maximum opportunity to practise both inside and outside the classroom. There are more formal lessons on grammar and vocabulary and less formal learning activities including Active English Practice sessions in the afternoons.
You learn through working in pairs and groups, acting out relevant real life situations, and through assignments or projects inside the teaching room or outside.
There is an excursion preparation lesson on the day before each full-day excursion and a follow-up lesson on the day after.
You will want to improve your English as much as you can so that you will be able to talk in a more relaxed and easy manner with your teachers, your hosts and your new friends on the course! The common language will, of course, be English! You’ll need your English, too, when you are out on excursions and when you are doing your shopping!
Activities and excursions [click to expand / minimise]
You go to The Spectrum Leisure Centre for ten-pin bowling, ice-skating or swimming. The pool has a wave machine, flumes, slides and whirlpools. We also offer a variety of sporting and other local activities in and around Guildford. Each week there is an evening activity, for example either a disco or perhaps an ice-skating disco at The Spectrum.
You go on excursions to such interesting and well-known places as Brighton, Portsmouth, Oxford and Canterbury. There is always an excursion to London which includes an attraction such as a Blue Badge guided tour, the London Eye or a river boat trip.
Members of EJO staff accompany each activity and excursion.
