"I worried about sending my son to England on his own. His teacher and her family looked after him very well and treated him like one of the family. Now he really wants to go back again."

SVETLANA T — St Petersburg

These courses are for people over the age of 18 years who wish to study on an intensive course in Malta, Ireland, USA or Canada and make rapid improvement in their knowledge and skills in the English language.

Students joining these courses want to be able to hold conversations much more easily and with a great deal more confidence.

They want to speak and to understand with much less concentration and effort.

General English is for students of all ages and backgrounds, including those who have moved on to new phases in their lives after a number of years in a successful career. Students can take this course, however much or however little English they may already know.

Business and Professional English is the course for those who need English for their work. Some participants join in order to give themselves a more attractive profile to offer to the job market in their particular field. Others take this course to enhance their positions in the companies with which they are already associated.

In other instances, employers and personnel officers send members of their staff teams on these courses as part of the implementation of in-company training plans.

You complete an English test and a Needs Analysis during your first lesson and your host teacher plans a course specifically designed to meet your needs.

You and your teacher review your course and your progress as you go along but there is always a formal review halfway through the course.

You are learning English as it is used around the world today. Your teacher works with you on developing your skills in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, stress and intonation. You work together on speaking, listening and understanding and you focus on the particular learning needs and activities that you have identified as your priorities.

Most students need to develop their skills in the correct use of English tenses. This is fundamental in the effective learning of the language. They almost always need to work, too, on prepositions and vocabulary and on pronunciation, stress and intonation.

Our teachers are well aware that many English Home Lessons students are coming to their course from very different daily routines. Variety is a key element in our tuition sessions. Your host teacher varies pace, activity and content during lessons in order to maintain your motivation and interest.

If you are on a Business and Professional English course, in addition to developing your overall skills in using English you will be focussing on specific functions and contexts that you need in your work.

Examples of contexts that are often asked for:

  • Making presentations at meetings and conferences
  • Meeting potential customers and making a sale – the language of promoting and selling
  • Social conversation with business contacts – getting to know new people
  • Talking about the economy
  • Preparing written reports
  • Achieving successful results in the TOEIC, TOEFL or IELTS tests.

But there are, of course, many others.

Our teacher attaches importance to varying pace and activity in this intensive and challenging, but enjoyable and intensely rewarding learning environment.

We use modern course books especially chosen for your course, supplemented by relevant authentic materials such as articles from newspapers, magazines and journals and taped extracts from radio and TV programmes.

Our Director of Studies or another member of the EJO staff team either telephones or visits you to check that you are completely satisfied with your course.

The daily routine and timetable is obviously discussed between you and your host and depends on your needs and the specific language areas on which you wish to focus.

As an example, a typical weekday on a twenty-hour per week General English course might be the following:
