We offer other special interest areas, too! Please ask us if your own special interest is not included.

If you would like to learn with your own personal English teacher who also happens to have the same leisure time interest as you, then this is the course for you!

Intensive work on developing skills in English includes time spent using your shared special interest as the context. What more enjoyable way could there be to improve your English?

There are two leisure interest-related visits or activities each week with your host teacher. This simply makes your learning all the more relevant and enjoyable.

Your host teacher assesses your level of English during the first session and establishes with you your needs and priorities; related both to your general learning of English and to your particular interest. The proportion of lesson time that is devoted to working with your particular area of interest is also discussed.

You and your host teacher review your course and your progress as you go along but there is always a formal review half way through the course.

Our Director of Studies or another EJO representative either telephones or visits you to check that you are completely satisfied with your course.

Your host teacher works with you on speaking, listening and understanding and you focus on the particular learning needs and activities that you have identified as your priorities.

Most students need to develop their skills in the correct use of English tenses. This is fundamental in the effective learning of the language. They almost always need to work, too, on prepositions and vocabulary and on pronunciation, stress and intonation.

We use relevant, up-to-date course books with their associated audio-tapes and resource material associated with your shared special interest.

The daily routine and timetable is discussed between you and you host teacher. This is an example of a typical weekday on a twenty-hour-per-week Palaces and Castles Special Interest course:

0800  Breakfast with your host teacher
0915 — 1015  Lesson 1 — Review of the difference in use of present simple and present continuous tenses and intensive practice
1030 — 1130  Lesson 2 — Expressing an opinion, agreeing and disagreeing in English; discussion on English royal castles
1145 — 1245  Lesson 3 — Windsor Castle and preparation of visit to Windsor
1300  Lunch with your host teacher
1400 — 1800  Lesson 4 — Visit to nearby Windsor Castle and the royal town of Windsor
1800 — 1900  Early evening TV news
1915  Evening meal with your host teacher
2015 — 2200  Opportunity for free time, private study, relaxation or socialising

Here are some examples of the types of interest related activities previous students have undertaken on their special interest course:

Silvia, a personnel assistant from Geneva with a passion for entertaining, took a course with cookery as the special interest component. With her host teacher, she visited a local restaurant where she met the chef, talked to him about his menu and watched him prepare dishes. Silvia also went to a local food fair, talked to exhibitors, watched some demonstrations and tasted some sample food. At home she prepared traditional English dishes with her host teacher.

Philippe, a company executive from Orleans with a love of fine wine, took a course with wine as the special interest component. His teacher-accompanied visits were to a local wine production company where he learned all about wine production in the UK and to a specialist wine seller. He also went to a wine-tasting evening with his host teacher.

Ryotaro, a businessman from Tokyo who is very keen on golf, took a course with golf as his special interest. His teacher-accompanied visits were to two courses, one extremely famous, where he had the opportunity to play a round of golf. He also had the opportunity to meet other fellow golfers in the clubhouse afterwards.
